I grew up on a steady diet of books of the same ilk as Carl Bock's Temples & Elephants. Our school library was full of such adventure stories and imperial memoires; Russell Pasha's Egyptian Service; Jim Corbett's Man-Eaters of the Kumaon; Dumreicher's Trackers and Smugglers of the Red Sea and so on. So with Bock I recognised the type immediately.

Which was good because it allowed me without guilt or regret to scan-read the book's 283 odd pps over the course of a couple of hours.

Unfortunately the English edition did not contain that lovely and accurate illustration of the Shan bird found in the appendix of the German edition. (For me the illustrations are the best part of the book.)

That was irritating because it was my only reason for downloading Temples and Elephants in the first place.

Very little about Opium Weights was contained in the text of the English version. I've attached some screenshots of all the relevant pps but it seems to add little or nothing to our knowledge.

I'm curious to know if the German edition is the same, Michael?
