Inspired by Noel F. Singers wonderful and remarkable publication "Burmah - A Photographic Journey 1855 - 1925", published in 1993 by Paul Strachan - Kiscadale LTD. (unfortunately out of print), I startet collecting and dealing with Burmese vintage postcards.

"The largest supplier of Burmese postcards in the early twentieth century was the photographer D. A. Ahuja.
Whilst a newcomer to the photographic scene in Burma, within a few years he was producing a huge range of postcard views.
These included both his own studio's work and material photographed years before by firms such as Klier and Watts and Skeen.
Whether all these views were reproduced by Ahuja by purchased or piracy is unclear
but the cheap dublication of their elegant compositions for the tourist market clearly signalled the end of a photographic era."

"The most profilic postcard publisher in early twentieth century Burma is the firm D. A. Ahuja.
Ahuja became a proprietor of the firm of Watts and Skeen 1912 and thereafter reproduced many of their photographs under his own name."

"A number of early British photographers worked in Burma, including John McCosh (1852-54), Linnaeus Tripe, Philippe Klier and Felice Beato, one of the foremost early photographers of Asia who settled in Burma after a long stint in Japan.
D.A. Ahuja was the most prominent Indian photographer - likely from Punjab - to work in Burma, and his postcards dominated images of the state in popular media at the turn of the century. He took great care to have superb German printers turn his images into deeply colored, textured images. As fluent as he was with landscape and temple images, his many portraits of individual Burmese people set him in a class by himself among early Asian image publishers.
Postcards from Raphael Tuck & Sons are also prominently featured. Tucks cards usually make use of soft colors, many kinds of styles and a concentration using early color printing technology well. Photographs were not the sole source of these postcards. In fact, the originals were often paintings or artwork specially produced for postcard printing.
Sir Joseph Causton & Sons, originally in Finch Lane, London, was also a prominent British printing establishment whose origins reach into the early 1700s. It was only acquired and merged into another firm in 1985."

"Philip Adolphe Klier:

In 1871 he was a professional photographer in Moulmein, Burma.
His business included work as an optician, watchmaker, and jeweller as well running the firm known as Murken & Klier.
Around 1880 Klier moved to Rangoon, Burma‘s largest city.
In the wake of the conquest of the Irrawaddy Delta by the British in 1852, Rangoon had become the center of Indo-British power.
Klier worked independently until 1885 when he went into partnership with J. Jackson.
By 1890 the partnership was dissolved and Klier became independent again.
He sold his views of Lower Burma, Moulmein and the Andaman Islands, and 'Burmese celebrities and characters of Burmese life‘.
A number of his photographs were produced as photogravures in art books of the time."
