Leafing through my old correspondence I found a letter by D. Gear with some details which I think are worthy of being communicated.
Referring to his book "Earth to Heaven" he wrote me in a letter dated 1994/08/29:

On plate 53 there is a mistake.
The figure in Row D, third column, should be in Row C. third column.
The caption "As for period D" should read "As for period C" and be placed in Row B., third column.
The figure in Row E, fourth column, should go into Row D, third column.

So he shifted what I call C2(A+B) and T1D into a position where they become one period younger each.
In Table 20 the position is correct except a misprint: 1867 instead of (probably) 1767.

D.& J. Gear forgot rectifying the mistake in the 2000 Edition.
All things considered he was an extremely diligent collector of weights and of the literature belonging to it.
Due to the difficult political situation in South Africa he gave his collection in 1993 to the British Museum (Dpt. of Oriental Antiquities).

Hallo Herr molllat,
